Do the dishes

Case 7

A monk told Joshu, "I have just entered this monastery. I beg you to teach me." Joshu asked, "Have you eaten your rice porridge?" The monk replied, "I have." "Then," said Joshu, "Go and wash your bowl." At that moment the monk was enlightened.

This one is near and dear to my heart, not only for the creative use of doing dishes, but for its sublime simplicity.

If I were to offer any commentary on this one it would be that there is only one aspect of this that even makes it work, and that is the monk’s earnestness. If the monk did not seek liberation in earnest he would simply have a clean bowl.
