This is a very low-effort, speculative post but, I just happened to notice that the character for "chan" (禅) is also the character for "shan" - "to abdicate"
"Shan" also sounds very similar to [山] - "shan" - "mountain"
Nothing else to say except to put it out there for more informed people to comment on.
