The Record of Tung-shan, First Excerpt

Powell gives the reader a nice map at the start and footnotes at the end so you can follow up on unfamiliar names, references, and related cases.

I changed the wade-giles to pinyin for clarity.


Once, when Yunyan was making some straw sandals, Dongshan approached him and said, "I would like to have the Master's eyes."

Yunyan said, "Where have yours gone?"

"Liangjie has never had them." replied Dongshan.

Yunyan said, "Supposing you did have them, where would you put them?"

Dongshan said nothing. Yunyan said, "Isn't it the eye that desires eyes?"

"It is not my eye," replied Dongshan.

"Get out!" thundered Yunyan.


The Master addressed the assembly, saying, "To know the existence of the person who transcends the Buddha, you must first be capable of a bit of conversation."

A monk asked, "What sort of person is he who transcends the Buddha?"

"Not a Buddha," replied the Master.


Is anyone here capable of a bit of conversation?
