Ask any religious person to communicate anything about their religion without using a single word. Well, they can't. Religion is based on words. The muslims even claim that arabic is some kind of divine language which is the only language spoken in heaven.
And how about Zen? Zen never had anything to do with words, a doctrine, practice etc.
The separate transmission outside the teachings,
Not based on the written word,
Points directly at the human mind—
You see your nature and become a buddha
The reason that Zen is still classified as a religion is because some people wrongly associate Zen with Dogen Buddhism.
