Once upon a time a zen monk was walking along a farm, with cows and sheeps and the occasional sheep-dog, a herding community, and the monk was reading koans aloud, a monk asked does a dog have buddha-nature or not?” a student replied “Mu”
The monk had grown hungry, and had not eaten meat since he’d joined the monastery, and the animals these people bred were lean.
The monk asked again does a dog have buddha-nature or not?” and tipped the cow.
Naturally, the cow mooed very loudly.
The monk read aloud “If you see a Buddha in a road, kill him.” He drew his sword and slit the cows throat.
He made a delicious beef stew that night which he shared with the dogs.
