"Oak Tree in the Garden" Redux - Zen Tips for Students of Horticulture

Zen Tips for Students of Gardening

1. Prune early, and often. Use a sharp blade. Pruning encourages a strong base, and a strong base better supports everything above it. (See Tip #7)

2. Use the right tool for the job. It's more efficient to use a rake for the broad strokes and a hoe for tilling.

3. Gloves vs bare hands: Bare hands for the fine work (weeding, transplanting delicate plants) and gloves for the prickles. Sometimes it's helpful to feel the thing you're touching.

4. Drop expectations. Accept that things grow as they will, according to conditions. Accept that you may not be able to drop expectations.

5. Pay attention to signs. Droopy foliage needs more water, white mold needs sunlight.

6. Respond as appropriate (know what the plant needs). Do your homework. Ask an expert. Do not plant outside your zone.

7. Be ruthless. For persistent weeds, you will need to cut them at their root.

8. Fertilize, but not too much. See #6

9. Water, but not too much (#6)

10. Acknowledge the turn of the seasons and evolving "new normals". Climate change is a thing. Adapt or die.
