Induction

**Induction** is an interesting word.

We use it in social settings - like being 'inducted' into a group, or a company. There are 'safety inductions' etc.

In medicine, there is 'labor induction' - to prompt birth.

In logic, induction is a way to draw conclusions that are not absolutely guaranteed. Extended to Mathematics, the concept of 'infinity' isn't accessible without it, and so neither are real numbers (IANAMathematician).

In electronics, induction means generating electricity from magnetism, and is used in many ways.

Generally, to me, the connotations are 'indirectly cause' or 'influence without directly touching' - and kind of magical.

I thought it kind of works in the context of 'inducing' enlightenment in another person. Zen masters say 'don't listen to other people', 'you must see for yourself', 'there are no teachers of Zen'. But people are sometimes enlightened around them. It is, though, hard to argue that hitting someone with a stick is indirect.
