Several people here get really mad when they are told meditation is not Zen. I can imagine what is going on for them: life is hard and they thought they found salvation in meditation. They come here and some random dude tells them they're wrong? It probably sparks in them both fear and sadness to realize even that is not it. So they get mad and fight for it like a dog for its bone.
But the reason people tell you meditation is not Zen is not just to annoy you, it's because it's true, and it's helping you to tell you that.
Two stories that explain the problem to me would be the flag koan:
Two monks were arguing about a flag. One said: "The flag is moving.
The other said: "The wind is moving."
The sixth patriarch happened to be passing by. He told them: "Not the wind, not the flag; mind is moving."
And Baso:
Daibai asked Baso: "What is Buddha?"
Baso said: "This very mind is Buddha."
At all times, your reality is your mind. When you go grocery shopping, the whole store is your mind, the people, the groceries. If you disagree take it up with the koan above, or show me which parts are not your mind.
The sky, mountains, oceans. The world is your mind and you go sit quietly to find some "truth"? See the problem here?
As long as you look for specific postures/states of mind you can't really realize the truth that is everywhere.
This very mind is buddha. You are buddha. There are no practices that can help you realize, other than maybe old fools and internet friends reminding you who you are.
