Master Touzi was asked by a monk, “’All sounds are the voice of Buddha’—is this so?”
He said, “Yes.”
The monk said, “Master, don’t make a sound farting.” Touzi then hit him.
The monk also asked, “’Coarse words and fine speech all return to ultimate truth’—is this so?”
He said, “Yes.”
The monk said, “Can I call you an ass?” Touzi then hit him.
Dahui said, “Two outlaws are foiled.” He also said, “But tell me, which one is a bush bandit, and which one is a true rebel?”
Note: This one is just funny. There is no course or fine in Zen, yet the monk still gets hit for his courseness. Reminds me of Zen masters saying to not discriminate good and bad, and also saying you must be able to tell the difference between the two.
From Dahui's real Shobogenzo. Available as a Kindle ebook under the title Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching as translated by Cleary in two volumes.
