Zen and the 4th dimension
Do you like to get high? Of course you do. I know I do.
What you may not realize is that every time you get high, you are, in a small, sloppy way, touching that which Zen addresses : a larger, realer reality. A reality that transcends life, death, time, space, identity and basically everything else that you call reality.
The main difference is in the technique.
In Zen, instead of inhaling burning plants or eating pills, we use a manual technique. We call that technique meditation.
Meditation is definitely more work than eating a pill but we like it because
- It is cleaner than any drug. Very few weird side effects. Doesn't make you stupid.
- It is totally manual. It isn't being done to you, you are doing it. This gives you exquisite control over the process. Go as slow or fast as you like. You are basically gaining a super power.
- It's safe to use while operating heavy machinery.
- It has no ceiling. You can get as high as you want. No limits.
- It is self-correcting. Whatever stupid assumptions you hold, whatever crackbrained goals you pursue, whatever diseased habits you suffer from, even if they are what motivated you to meditate in the first place, meditation will help you get over them.
Zen and the 4th dimension
I'm referring to that book, Flatland, by Edwin Abbott Abbott. I'm saying that when we get high we enter that new dimension. It is very much like that.
