I'm a westerner. I live in an hebraic-christian culturally religious society. I've stumbled upon eastern teachings of all sorts. I feel it's really close to the truth, but regarding zen specifically, how can I even practice it if there's no Zen schools/monasteries around? I do meditate -- however how long am I going to do it calling it 'zazen' but in the end, losing that name because it bears little meaning to me as the techniques surrounding zazen are similar to the way I already meditate? I heard about Zen through Alan Watts. I just want to know the truth, am I supposed to pack all my stuff renounce family etc. and live ascetic life like homeless guy? Something like "Into the wild"?
How can theory explain something that's "not based on the written word"? I guess I'll just stop trying.
However, seeing that I'm here already -- am I getting it right? If you say to me "zen is not about truth or not-truth" or anything like it, should I just ignore it all and get back to my normal life? Why zen?
