Until reading Dahui's Shobogenzo, for me there was no difference between "the Way" and zen in the texts.
Reading Cleary's translation I've stumbled upon several passages where different masters talk about zen and "the Way" or Tao like two sperate things (teachings).
Besides the differentiation I got the impression that both teachings have been "accepted" and taught by zen masters.
I'll post some of them. Only excerpts. Read the whole thing on your own if you need to. What do you guys think?
7 Luoshan
It is not Chan, not Tao, not Buddha, not Dharma.
40 Langya Jiao (ok, this one might mean the same thing. Not sure about it. But why is he using different terms/ names in one sentence?)

I also don't seek after your old baldies all over the place who occupy a site and preach Chan and Tao.
