From Cleary's scholarship fail "Teachings of Zen"
Dongshan was asked, "The normal mind is the way; what is the normal mind?"
He replied, "Not picking up things along the road."
ewk book note index - I bet the original text says "is the tao" and the answer is "along the tao" because tao is the word for path, road, maybe even "thing followed".
Aside from that, how do you not pick things up? How do you tell if someone follows Dongshan's teaching or not?
