AIN'T NO PARTY LIKE A SELF-PITY PARTY

Once upon a time a monk named John was practicing dhyana. He stood straight and thought only on the profound, and upon the 13th day of the 12th month of the 10th year he finished the great [matter]. With a great sigh his mind cleared like an all day snow storm lifting.

That evening John went before the Master [to confirm his transformation-of-the-basis]. The Master said nothing, but simply nodded in recognition of his ascent.

They sat in silence together. Outside the lecture hall a summer night passed and the cooing of doves in the eaves lilted in upon the breeze coming through the opened windows.

After a time the Master said, "Do you now know why 10 years have vanished for you while the world spun [life continued untouched]?"

John answered, "Yes, it is because I was an asshole".

The Master's eyes gleamed, but that was only one-half a full step and he pressed further, "Yes, but why were you an asshole?"

John replied, "Because I took everything personally".

The Master bowed.
