Part 15: Speech and Sayings

A monk asked, "During such a time, without a 'Buddha' classification
[and] without a 'sentient beings' classification,
how would someone be guided across?"1

The Master said, "You saying [we are] without a 'Buddha' classification [and]
without an 'sentient beings' classification
already is having completed the guiding across.
Likewise are his recorded spoken sayings."2

曰。 The monk said, "If so,
all the affairs belong to the time when Buddha entered the world
cannot be left unspoken [about]."

The Master asked, "How would you speak [about them]?"

曰。 The monk said, "Supposing [someone] spoke [about them],
speech too [would be] inadequate."

The Master said, "If [you] say speech is inadequate, are the 'sayings' adequate?
You search and pursue this way in vain.
Who sets these boundaries for you?"

The monk asked, "Since no one is setting boundaries,
who is a person 'over there'?"

The Master said, "If you have not come to quote [Buddha's] teachings,
then where [can we] discuss 'Buddha'?
Since [we're] not discussing Buddha,
with whom can this old monk discuss [being] 'over here' or 'over there'?"

Notes:
1. 圖度 (guide across) In the Buddhist context means 'to lead sentient beings to liberation from the cycle of birth and death'.
2. Likely referring to Buddha's teachings.
