This is my ewk thread. There are many like them, but this one is mine.
I think I've been afraid to make this thread. I can't speak for anybody else but maybe it's true for other people too. Nobody ever says it but everybody has to be thinking it. Am I alone in this? Is everyone just afraid of saying the words?
The ones that have come closest to making this thread are the ewk detractors. As for the ewk proponents... I don't know if there are any of those. I consider him a friend but he's also the person I scrutinize the most so I don't know where that leaves me.
So what's this about? I'll format it as code so everyone can see it.
I think ewk is enlightened as pertains to the Zen tradition
Now, queue the ridicule. What a thing to say. A live action Buddha on a children's and young adult internet forum?
Well... yeah? They gotta be somewhere, right? They certainly aren't in the Zen Buddhist meditation centers. I've been there and talked to these people and they're not there. Goddamnit people are gonna make fun of me forever for this, aren't they? Oh well, so be it.
So, what's my argument?
I don't have a Zen Master radar. I don't claim the authority to recognizing Zen Masters. But I do think the years I've spent on this forum have made me able to recognize who isn't one. And that's pretty much always enough to disqualify any particular person within a few paragraphs of exchanging words with them.
It hasn't been enough for ewk, and I'd say I've been watching him like a hawk and trying to get him to slip up for years. And I'll continue trying, but damnit, I haven't managed yet. I did get an uncharacteristic rise out of him at some point and we'll get to that, but I think it still fits into the tradition.
If anybody has an argument against what I'm saying here, please bring it out. Nobody's more eager to disqualify him than I am.
So here's the reasoning for my argument and additional possibly relevant information
Reasoning:
- He hasn't slipped up yet
- He has been acting in the same predictable but unpredictable way the Zen Masters in the stories act, but with his own unique spin on it. It's genius really. Come to a tradition that talks about something explicitly not based on the written word and base all your arguments on books. It's mind boggling. Come on, you know Zhaozhou would've approved. Maybe he's just a really good actor, but if he managed to keep an act up that long and that consistently then I guess he earned the right to deceive me.
Enlightenment experience:
- I think he said some thing about seeing some trees once. Maybe someone else remembers and can dig it up. Why's it always the goddamn trees?
Uncharacteristic behavior:
- I think I'm the only one I know who ever got a rise out of him. I even managed to dig up the link: https://old.reddit.com/r/zensangha/comments/2n0mq5/movie_club/cm99sz7/ It was a Zensangha thread about movies. I'm not sure the movie thing ever took off. I never saw a thread about it again but I didn't spend that much time on that sub.
So, that's what I got. Well, that's a lie, I'm sure you'll have to drag it out of me.
Now, let's go and get this party started.
