What if mind discriminates but catches itself doing so and then looks back inward for the source of peace instead of allowing discrimination to take hold? Does a person have to be enlightened before they can focus on how blissful the feeling of neutrality is? It seems contradictory to have neutrality be bliss but then it also seems like from this point of not feeling anything in particular, good or bad, you are kind of able to just create whatever state of mind is desired.
I don’t mean not feeling as in depression, I just mean a calm neutral state when going about the day without being bothered by anything in particular even when doing something that used to be stressful.
I don’t care about enlightenment, I’m only wondering about nirvana for the sake of eliminating suffering and am wondering if nirvana is the same as being at peace and training the mind to look for that peace at the first signs of stress.
I’m also wondering if what I think of as nirvana is even what Zen thinks of as nirvana. No stress is found, and by being mindful of the body at all times no stress is allowed to arise. Simply breathing feels amazing when all focus is placed in it. Water is the most satisfying thing there is.
But in my research it seems almost like for it to be real progress it has to be something that is automatic, hence the constant sayings regarding nothing sought.
