Baiyun Duan 34: Tianhuang's Deviation

One day, Longtan, who was investigating with Tianhuang, said, "Since I've arrived, no one has instructed me on what is the essence of Mind."

Tianhuang said, "I've been pointing out the essence of Mind to you since you've arrived."

"Where did you point it out?"

"You come, holding up a cup of tea, and I am the one who receives it from you. You come, walking in with food, and I am the one who receives it from you. When you bow, I immediately lower my head—where have I not pointed out the essence of Mind?"

Longtan lowered his head for a long time. Tianhuang said, "See it, and you immediately see it as it is—estimation and reflection is just deviation."

Longtan's anxiety eased immediately.

Then he asked, "What about sustaining this capacity?"

Tianhuang said:

Confide in your nature, meandering without effort,
With a relaxed and open mind, according to circumstances—
Only all of your ordinary heart,
There is no other holy solution.

[0297c23] 龍潭。一日問天皇曰。某自到來。不蒙指示心要。皇曰。自汝到來。吾未嘗不指汝心要。師曰。何處指示。曰。汝擎茶來。吾為汝接。汝行食來。吾為汝受。汝和南時。吾便低首。何處不指示心要。師低頭良久。皇曰。見則直下便見。擬思即差。師當下開解。復問。如何保任。皇曰。任性逍遙。隨緣放曠。但盡凡心。別無聖解。

Shedding the white, seeking teacher's instructions, a costly hardship;
Holding up the tea, asking if one can drink it themselves—
Again, for no reason, recounting the affair for three years,
Smiling, the man sells cakes on the street corner.
