Bullshit, arrogance and conceit: Examining the relationship between bullshit susceptibility and metacognitive judgments.

“I think what this research suggests is that the factors that make us poor judges of our own cognition might be the same factors that make us poor judges of meaning and patterns. Perhaps nudging people toward reflective or analytic approaches might reduce overconfidence and make people more accurate in evaluating meaning and solving problems.”

Core of the article is saying that a little critical thinking skills and self scrutinization keeps one humble and able to clearly assess their abilities, as opposed to fostering confusion about them.

Now back to zen.

If you look upon the Buddha as presenting a pure, bright or Enlightened appearance, or upon sentient beings as presenting a foul, dark or mortal-seeming appearance, these conceptions resulting from attachment to form will keep you from supreme knowledge, even after the passing of as many aeons as there are sands in the Ganges.

On the Transmission of Mind (Huangbo) #3

It may not look the related at first, but huangbo is practically saying the same thing. If we're not going to look at our perceptions with a critical eye, we will stay attached to them and it will prevent us from seeing reality as it is. Denial never solved any issue.

The article mentions an example:

“Consider the statement: ‘wholeness quiets infinite phenomena.’ At first glance, this statement might appear really deep.At first glance, this statement might appear really deep. You can imagine your yoga teacher or hippie uncle saying it. But if you stop and really think about it, this string of words doesn’t actually communicate any meaning – it’s bullshit,”

People often get mad when being told the same thing in this forum. It's even worse when they try to claim zen masters just went along with everything, which they obviously didn't:

Clearly those with such a view cannot distinguish falsehood from truth.

When I was traveling around I saw a lot of this type; recently they've become especially abundant. They gather groups of three to five hundred cloud gazers, saying this is the message of the Southern School, taking the Platform Scripture and altering it, adding confused drivel and excising what the sage meant, deluding followers. How can this be the verbal teaching?

"This doesn't even speak of bodhisattvas or the two vehicles - how could the ignorant confusion of sentient beings be considered the same as the knowledge and perception of Buddhas?"

if you act on perception and cognition, this is perception and cognition - it is not seeking truth.'"

So frauds are nothing new, they were prevalent even way back when, amd their game isn't anything new either. People like to think that because you don't believe in ad populum, that you somehow don't get how academic consesus works, which are obviously completely different things. When bodhidharma came to the five schools for the first time he had to lecture them. 1 guy vs 5 schools. You don't tell a guy like that to follow the academic consesus.

The alteration of sutras is still going on as well and there's a lot of people complaining about why people compare texts or dig through them. Well, this is why. We're dealing with a large group of zen master wannabes and a bunch of ignorant folk who keep altering and misinterpreting stuff and keep sharing it with eachother, teaching eachother and others and approving of eachother, keeping a cycle of bullshit going.

There is only the one reality, neither to be realized nor attained. To say 'I am able to realize something' or 'I am able to attain something' is to place yourself among the arrogant. The men who flapped their garments and left the meeting as mentioned in the Lotus Sutra were just such people. [These people THOUGHT they had understood and were smugly self-satisfied.] Therefore the Buddha said: 'I truly obtained nothing from Enlightenment.' There is just a mysterious tacit understanding and no more.

There's always someone who doesn't believe, even when guatama is involved.

Anyone remember the case where the guy walks off in anger because he didn't get to hear what he wanted to hear? Good stuff.

One of the original Zen masters said, "If you want to attain harmonization quickly, just speak of nonduality." It is not a matter of just saying it and thereupon understanding; you must actually attain harmonization before you can realize this.

(Don't just say things.)

I have seen many who cannot follow principle; when they take it up, they turn it upside down at once. They make useless theoretical interpretations of the sayings and model cases of the ancients, their different challenges, records of seasonal addresses, and the modalities of their individual schools, considering this to be Zen study. How miserable! Study of the path is not like this.

(No theoretical interpretations.)

People of the later generations are even more ignorant; spending ten or fifteen years on vain conceit, they attain nothing at all. You have unconsciously acquired habits of thinking about yourself and others, and hardly even give a thought to the matter of independence. How will you be in the future?

(Don't be heedless.)

Instant Zen (Foyan) #47: Principle and Phenomena

I thought conceit was an interesting word.

Essential nature is fundamentally pure, and doesn't depend on cultivation to become so. Having realization and cultivation is the same as conceit.
