It's bordering on spam at this point, but let me explain, because I think the posts were being misunderstood. The first one that got removed and the second didn't have that much engagement.
Lets say there's a tradition. In this tradition, people say, it doesn't matter which words you use. It doesn't matter if you don't know. The "words" only change in meaning and effect when they are supported by a proper understanding.
So that means, that if two people say the same thing, according to zen, you should be able to distinguish which person has a better understanding of that thing.
If that's the case, then we can also assume the same applies to the raising of a finger. Juzhi's case in the Wumenguan illustrates that perfectly and confirms that point.
So then, we can assume, that if everybody was asked to use the same symbol at the same time that there are still differences that can be observed to a discerning eye and I think that if people all do it at the same time, the differences might become more apparent because of all the contrast.
It may seem like a stupid question to some of you folk, but lets not forgot that some masters of old did exactly the same thing, asking the same kind of questions over and over from different people, just to try and gain a bit of an understanding.
Now that the idea has been explained, I hope the post gets a little more traffic.
I can't imagine being the only one who would find something as this interesting to see.
