[You are], throughout Heaven & Earth, unrivaled.
Suzuki translates the last bit as “walking in royal solitude” or something.
The case records show that no one who comes to Zen Masters leaves getting what they wanted. Case in point: Deshan was some sutra-worshipping Buddhist zealot who came South to “obliterate” Zen in the name of Buddha-Jesus!
He ended up burning his religious commentary after an enlightenment that never saved anyone and left him in the dark.
Of course, people unequipped to tackle Deshan can’t tackle the questions his tradition asks:
What is the basis of Zen Masters’ understanding of each other?
Who is the one universally unrivaled?
What is the function of a Zen community?
