A monk asked, “What is the host amidst the guest?”
The master said, “I do not ask for a wife.”
The monk said, “What is the guest amidst the host?”
The master said, “I have no Father-in-law.”
Note One of the four positions of host and guest: host as host, guest as guest, host amidst guest, guest amidst host. These were made famous by Lin-chi. They illustrate the reality of subject and object.
Could anybody elaborate on this? I haven’t read lin-chi yet. What’s the meaning behind it, how did he make it famous, and what do you make of joshu’s response?
