Whenever Luzu saw a monk coming, he would immediately face the wall.
The record is full of Zen Masters who said nothing when students showed up to ask questions.
Deshan just hit them, and pushed them back out the door.
In one of his sermons, he said:
You've been charmed by the old baldies in centers all over into claiming you are 'practitioners' and rigidly posturing as if you were like enlightened people.
There's a lie spread on r/Zen, that a line like above always applies to meditation; r/Zen has suffered years of aggressive propaganda, so we still regularly get people who tow the line, and try to push the practice of AMA, and other dumb r/Zen practices, like avoiding meditation at all costs.
People over Reddit are going to be, in almost all cases, bad friends to try and learn a spiritual path from. They don't know you, and most of them don't even know themselves in any capacity.
Deshan also said:
You impulsively run elsewhere claiming to understand Chan and the Way, boasting and putting on airs. When you get to this point, you'll have to vomit it all out before you can realize freedom...you want to collect unusual sayings and store them in your chest, so you can talk cleverly, getting by on glibness, hoping to be acknowledged by people as a Chan master, wanting to obtain a position of prominence.
If you entertain such views, some day you'll go to hell where your tongue will be pulled out.
