Traveling the way is not magic. It's not a religion. It is more like a science. A "discipline", if you will...
It is a way toward truth, not a way toward magical super-powers. Many come to zen thinking it will give them something, but they already have it. They are already in harmonious unity with the whole of existence before they started seeking.
Any time one starts talking about "Harmony" or "unity" people (who don't understand those words) will think there's something mystical being discussed, rather than something physical embodied in their flesh. This is a mistake. Let me illustrate.
.
Ohm...
is the scientific unit of resistance.
That which holds back the flow.
It is also the unit of reactance
That opposes change of direction
inducing current into neighboring circuits
and back within itself.
One day Master Yunmen said, "The ancient ones faced the wall and shut the gate. But could they break through [this] in here?"
In place of his audience, Yunmen said, "What a dry piece of shit is [this] in here!"
He added, "One."
When facing a wall,
it is your own ohms
that hold you back
from breaking through...
Master Huanglong Xin eulogized a master teacher:
The Sixth Grand Master was not a powerful man back then; Hiring another to write on the wall, he himself was confused. Quite clearly he had a verse saying there is no thing,
Yet he accepted another's bowl.
Dahui remarked, "Now tell me, is the bowl a thing, or not a thing? If you say it's a thing, then old Huanglong isn't a powerful man either. If you say it's not a thing, how does that affect the bowl?"
That fact makes sense when
understanding the senses, scientifically:
Electromagnetism is all of them.
Might as well call it "dukka".
"Karma" is like gravity;
Just the shape of
the universal field of matter
Each effecting and effected by
all matter falling toward the future
because there's nowhere else to go.
Master Dinghui Xin asked a monk, "How do the adepts of the South evaluate the National Teacher Zhong's saying about inanimate objects expounding the Dharma?"
The monk said, "Everyone says it refers to the interchange of functions of the six senses."
Xin said, "In the Teachings it says 'There are no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind' - what is there to interchange functions?"
The monk tried to think of something to say; Xin hit him right across the back.
Dharma master Sheng said, "Knock on space, and it makes a sound; knock on wood and there's no sound."
Yunmen knocked at the air with his staff and said, "Aye yay yay." He also knocked on a board and said, "Does it make a sound?"
A monk said, "It makes a sound."
Yunmen said, "You worldling!" He knocked the board again and said, "What do you call 'sound'?"
A carefully constructed circuit can transmit outside itself and be received by another that has been tuned properly. All done using harmonious coupling to an all pervading universal field of energy. You are probably reading this on just such a device. Nothing "Woo-Woo" or "metaphysical" about it, you just have to know what the ideas really mean. Traveling the way is like that.
The spiritual light, shining independently,
transcends the senses and objects;
the essence is revealed, real and eternal.
not confined to written words.
The nature of mind has no stain;
it is basically complete of itself.
just detach from false mental objects
and be enlightened to being—as-is. -Baizhang
