I read a story a long time ago that ended with the above. I want to share it with some friends, and I thought it would be easy to find, but it has disappeared from the internet. I catalogued it in my mind as a koan, but that may not be accurate. Nevertheless, I’m hoping someone here knows it. As I recall, it goes something like this:
An old man was returning from home from a journey alone. In the darkening light, he spotted a group of riders coming over a hill ahead. Fearing bandits, he snuck off the road and hid in a nearby cemetery. The supposed bandits cresting the hill were actually the Emperor’s guard. The Captain of the Guard spotted the old man sneaking away, and rode down to investigate. Recognizing the old man, he said, “Master, what are you doing hiding in this graveyard?” The old man replied, “It may sound strange to you, but I am here because you are here, and you are here because I am here.”
If you know where I can find this story, please let me know. Thank you for your help.
