People new to Zen, especially those with no formal training in Buddhism, might not recognize just how controversial Zen is. But these controversies are less the fault of Zen Masters, and more the fault of Buddhism's "stealth religious faith".
We can bring this Buddhist stealth faith to light by asking some basic questions:
-
Is there a sudden Enlightenment requiring no study, no path, no conformity to "right" anything?
-
Is there any sort of truth or guidance to be learned?
-
To what must we be obedient to?
-
Who is the boss?
A quick comparison between /r/zen/wiki/famous_cases and /r/zen/wiki/buddhism shows how sharply incompatible Zen and Buddhism are... some Buddhists call Buddha their "only master", whereas Yunmen says "set the dogs on Buddha".
