Master Yunmen once said, "The lamp is yourself. Take a bowl and eat food; the food is not yourself." A monk then asked, "How about when the food is oneself?" Yunmen said, "This wild fox spirit, a fellow in a three- family village." He also said, "Come on, come on - you're not saying food is yourself." He said, "I am." Yunmen said, "You'll see in a dream in the year of the ass, a fellow in a three-family village."

"Followers of the Way, don't take up with some dream or phantom for a companion. Sooner or later you're headed for the impermanence that awaits us all. While you are in this world, what sort of thing do you look to for emancipation?

Yuanwu: Even Xuedou hasn't seen it in dreams. He's adding frost on top of snow. Do you know?

Welcome! ewk comment: Rationalists are people who think there is a logic to Zen, and that grasping it, Enlightenment is just a concept.
It is Rationalism itself that is just the concept. That's why Zen Masters can say stuff you can't say.
When someone tries to teach you, to interpret for you, to explain to you, they are putting themselves and their ideas between you and the text. We've seen religious people do this in commentaries for decades, and now it's happening all over the internet in blogs, podcasts, and various "helpful" webpages.
Rationalism is very popular, right after "certified church person".
It's trust in mind. Not trusting in church authority or Rationalist claims.
That's why Rationalists don't like Enlightenment. It doesn't make sense.
Rationalists are from the same three family village as churchers.
