In
intensive meditationstudying Zen(參禪) this is called the law of gold and manure: if you don't understand, it's like gold; when you see through it, it's like manure. That is why it says, "Told to people, it's not worth a cent."You just leave behind emotional calculations of gain and loss, victory and defeat, and you'll naturally always fool the woman and look down on Zhaozhou. But if you come to my door, don't point to yourself while carrying a board.
A matter of gold and shit...
People really don't talk about this sort of instruction when they do #Zen tweets or give talks at your local University's religious studies' department.
Everyone comes insisting they've got something valuable to share with people: Beginners Mind, LSD-DMT-BBQ, Ritual Meditation, Buddhism, Daoism, Buddhism-Daoism, Buddhism-Daosim-Gnostic-Christianity, etc.
What about Zen Masters?
-
Used Shit Sponge
-
Oak Tree in Courtyard
-
Broken Tile
All of these have been the source of conversation by Zen Masters.
Like it's said...
In their poverty, they always wear ragged clothing,
But they have the jewel of no price treasured within.
This jewel of no price can never be used up
Though they spend it freely to help people they meet.
Dharmakaya, Sambogakaya, Nirmanakaya,
And the four kinds of wisdom
Are all contained within.
The eight kinds of emancipation and the six universal powers
Are all impressed on the ground of their mind.
