Measuring Tap #26: Short, but compact

Measuring Tap was a book written by Master Xuedou, and then "re-written" when Master Yuanwu added line by line comments on Xuedou's teaching and then a longer discussion of his own.

26: Jingqing questions a monk

Jingqing asked a monk, "How do you understand Zhaozhou's 'Go drink tea'?"

(Yuanwu) (A bright pearl is not to be shot at a sparrow chick.)

The monk immediately left.

(Yuanwu) (He seems right, alright, but isn't.)

Jingqing said, "He imitates a useless walk in Handan."

(Yuanwu) (He upholds with one hand and pushes down with one hand.)

Xuedou's Teaching

Xuedou: "This monk is not a man of Handan-why does he imitate a useless walk?

(Yuanwu) He helps the strong, not the weak.

Xuedou: "If you can discern, I'll drink tea with you."

 (Yuanwu) Happily there's no connection.

Yuanwu's Teaching

Yuanwu said, "Adding error to error. Chan master Nan said, "They meet and question one another to know where they're coming from." Xuedou's overall meaning is just to bring out this meeting.

Welcome! ewk comment:

https://www.reddit.com/r/zen/comments/ds19zq/joshus_go_have_some_tea/ gives us:

The master (Zhaozhou [Jow joe] aka Joshu] questioned two new arrivals.

The master asked the first one, "Have you been here before?"

The monk said, "No, I haven't."

The master said, "Go have some tea."

The master then asked the other monk, "Have you been here before?"

The monk said, "Yes, I have."

The master said, "Go have some tea."

The monk asked, "Setting aside the fact that you told the one who'd never been here before to go have some tea, why did you tell the one who had been here before to go have some tea?"

The master said, "Head monk!"

The head monk said, "Yes?"

The master said, "Go have some tea."

There are lots of people who try to imitate Zen Masters... one question from this Case is what to do when people are convinced by an imitation?
