Some people haven't read cover to cover the sayings of any one Zen Master, and instead claim to have understood the whole book by misreading one saying.
Some people attend a church service and conclude that the church knows more about Zen than any book.
I have repeatedly said that Zen has always been the name of the famous teachings of the lineage of Bodhidharma. Some people have never read a single book of instruction written by a Zen Master:
- Book of Serenity, Wansong's teaching
- Blue Cliff Record and Measuring Tap, Yuanwu's teaching
- Wumen's Checkpoint, Wumen's teaching.
Wumen says that Zen makes mind it's foundation, and no gate is the dharma gate.

What are some definitions that people who don't study Zen claim are definitive, and what Zen teachings disputes those?
