Zongmi, a Buddhist philosopher, argued that the five houses of Zen had different teachings. Three generations of Zen Masters rejected that claim explicitly.
There's another way to look at this question though by comparing the teachings of Dongshan, an early legendary figure in the Soto/Caodong lineage, with Wumen's Checkpoint.
Dongshan makes a shocking pronouncement:
Enlightenment has no entrance.
Wumen, hundreds of years later, begins his book of instruction with
Zen takes no-gate as the dharma gate.
These are clearly entirely parallel teachings.
Academics will of course point out that Dongshan studied under Nanquan, and arguably was his Dharma heir. This would render Soto a largely fictitious lineage, something that comes up later with Touzi.
As any fan of Soto/Caodong knows this branch of Zen are cowboys of Zen, the Lone Rangers, the Ninja Assassins. Their attitude is where you find their Caodong Sotoness. Nanquan chopped up a cab but that didn't give him a reputation or a nickname, like Dongshan's He WhO KillS bY QuesTions.
