Menghong, in his post-script to Wumen's Checkpoint remarks:
"To say 'directly indicated' is already roundabout; to say 'become enlightened' is rather embarrassing."
Zen is singularly unique in that it is not a tradition contingent on claim that you will get any special truth, wisdom, or enlightenment from them. They don't even take their own kind--their superstars--seriously or even worth a cent.
There is a running thread of Zen Masters cringing, embarrassed, and ashamed of their words.
Which makes people who go around claiming that they have 'become enlightened' and telling people to worship their words just...not Zen.
