Coming in here to talk about the truth

Zen is, if anything, an appeal to the truth. Zen masters concerned themselves with the realization of truth and the elimination of false views. Without words, without commentary, they saw for themselves the truth of the situation we are in as living human beings. With words, with commentary, they left records for study, but these records clearly indicate that words fail where direct experience of the truth is concerned.

Coming in here, to this subreddit, to talk about the truth is like walking into a Christian church to talk about the truth. You know what they are going to tell you because they are getting it from a book. Before you even go in, you can accurately guess how they will answer your sincere questions, if you've had any experience with this dedicated school of thought.

They have a bible to thump, and thump it they will as soon as you question their preconceived notions. Pick any church, and you can expect to hear about Jesus, and his sacrifice, and believing in his name. They have ready answers for complex problems, answers written in books you can read yourself, but rarely will you find a genuine interest in truth where bibles are thumped. Bible thumping is an alternative to finding out the truth, finding out the truth makes people want to burn up their notes.

It isn't necessary, beneficial, or practical to go into a church and try to convince them they are wrong and you know better. They are on their own path, the path of confusion, the dream of many symbols, lost in the mandala of shapes and colors. Zen is the still point in the center. No group of book enthusiasts will put you there, it's a solo journey. Don't bother with the dogs barking outside the gate, they are chained by their own understanding.

Zen is free and open like the clear blue sky. This place is a basement full of sweaty argument. Be free.
