Huangbo Translation Comparison: 1.5

C.1.5. Buddhas and sentient beings are of the one-mind which is devoid of differences, just like the empty sky that is devoid of diversity and deterioration even as the great orb of sun shines down in four directions.

As the sun rises and brightness covers all under heaven, this empty sky has never brightened. As the sun sets and darkness covers all under heaven, this empty sky has never darkened. Even as the states of brightness and darkness invade and rob each other, the nature of empty sky remains vast and unchanging.

The mind of Buddhas and sentient beings is also as such.

B.1.2.(continued). The Buddha and all sentient beings are the One Mind and nothing else.

B.1.3. Mind is like the void in which there is no confusion or evil, as when the sun wheels through it shining upon the four corners of the world. For, when the sun rises and illuminates the whole earth, the void gains not in brilliance; and, when the sun sets, the void does not darken. The phenomena of light and dark alternate with each other, but the nature of the void remains unchanged. So it is with the Mind of the Buddha and of sentient beings.

TC. Buddhas and living beings are one mind, no different, like space, without mixture, without decay. It is like the sun illuminating the world; when the sun rises, light covers the world, while space has not been illumined. When the sun sets, darkness covers the world, yet space has not been darkened. States of light and darkness supersede one another, while the nature of space is empty and unchanging. Buddhas and the mind of living beings are also like this;...

LT. The Buddhas and sentient beings possess the same fundamental Mind, neither mixing nor separating the quality of true void-ness. When the sun shines over the four directions, the world becomes light, but true void-ness is never light. When the sun sets, the world becomes dark, but void-ness is never dark. The regions of dark and light destroy each other, but the nature of void-ness is clear and undisturbed. The True Mind of both Buddhas and sentient beings enjoys this same nature.

DT. Buddhas and sentient beings grow out of the One Mind and there are no differences between them. It is like space where there are no complexities, nor is it subject to destruction. It is like the great sun which illumines the four worlds: when it rises, its light pervades all over the world, but space itself gains thereby no illumination. When the sun sets, darkness reigns everywhere, but space itself does not share this darkness. Light and darkness drive each other out and alternately prevail, but space itself is vast emptiness and suffers no vicissitudes.

The same may be said of the Mind that constitutes the essence of Buddha as well as that of sentient being.

Pretty soon I will start incorporating McRae, but on the first run, will only be looking at the initial record (Essentials on Transmission of Mind/Chuanxinfayao), and leaving the Wanling Record for later. At that point, chin, Lok To, McRae bow out, while Leahy tags in. My current copy of Suzuki doesn't even reach the first Q&A section, so I'll go rummaging for more. I'll also have to track down the Transmission of the Lamp, which wiki says is said to hold and excerpt ofthe "official" version of Huangbo's treatise, whatever than means.

Always looking for more translations. Let me know if you know of any.

The whole voidness/space/empty sky thing has always caused me to throw up my hands with consternation. In academic philosophy, we have a history of not translating technical terms like Dasein and eudaimonia so as to teach and learn all the implications that the author meant to bring when using that particular word.

"Void" is sort of ironically laughable in this regard, but there is also a long history of people bringing in their own concepts that may not actually apply; empty, without characteristics, eternal, infinitely manifesting, etc. Not sure what a better word would be.
