[Gupta Tripitaka] succeeded to the Sixth Patriarch. The Master was a person from India. When he arrived at the Li village in the Dingxiang district of Taiyuan, he saw a disciple of Grand Master Shenxiu who had patched grass into a cottage; sitting there alone in meditation, he contemplated mind.
The Master asked, "What are you doing?"
[The disciple] answered, "Contemplating on stillness"
. . .
[Gupta Tripitaka] asked: "Who is your teacher?"
[The student] answered: "Preceptor Shenxiu"
[Gupta Tripitaka] said: "Does your master only teach this method or does he also have other teachings?"
The student answered: "He just taught me to contemplate stillness."
[Gupta Tripitaka] said, "The teaching which is practiced in India by inferior [outsiders] is regarded as the Chan school in this land. You greatly mistaken person!"
In case anyone forgot, Shenxiu is the loser that got poetry slammed so hard and humiliated so thoroughly by the Sixth Patriarch he sent a lynch mob after him.
Anyway, Gupta, a guy from India, suggests that regardless of anything else--no one in the old country ever confused this kind of "quiet meditation on mind" crap with Zen. Which is not only confirmation of how meditation-practitioners are a bunch of losers in the birthplace of Zen Master Buddha & Bodhidharma, but that China has had a major issue from the get-go about confusing Buddhist-losers with Zen.
What might an /r/zen loser look like?
How about this: If you're forming and defending lynch mobs to kill Zen Masters for your "quietly meditate, scrub urself clean of defilements, sing kumbaya...or else" religion, while still insisting it is Zen, you're a loser.
