Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo, Vo. 2:
Yunfeng Yue said, ...Chan worthies, whenever you set out to travel around, you must distinguish false and true, discern reality and artifice, have a bit of eye sinew. Even so, this is drawing the bow after the thief has gone.”
Dahui said, “These words of Yunfeng can blind people and also can open people’s eyes.”
.
(Welcome link) (ewkwho?) note: Occasionally we get a Buddhist in here who wants to argue that enlightenment isn't sudden... it's gradual... then they argue it is not only gradual, but it requires practices and refinements... and there are stages... and then they argue that enlightenment is just adherence to doctrine.
What's the counter-argument? That suddenly people are transformed into all wise Zen Masters who will never lose a dharma combat again? What of Layman Pang, famous for losing? What of Dongshan's "first you must be capable of conversation"? What about Wumen's to "never to allow oneself to be deceived is to wear chains"?
It's like there are two different conversations going on. Which conversation do we study here?
