Special Snowflakes

When the Layman took leave of Yaoshan, the Master had ten Chan students accompany him as far as the gate. There the Layman, pointing to the snow in the sky, said: "Lovely snow! Flake after flake does not fall another place."

"Where do they fall?" asked the Chan student Zhuan.

The Layman gave him a slap.

"Don't be so crude." said Zhuan.

"How can you call yourself a Chan student!" cried the Layman. "Old Yama won't let go of you."

"How about you?" returned Zhuan.

The Layman gave him another slap and said: "Your eyes see like a blind man's; your mouth speaks like a mute's."

In one hand, we have a stupid question being asked by someone who calls themselves a Zen student; in the other, we see the Layman not ignore it.

Sounding the bell to announce yourself as a Zen student, Zen Master, 7th Zen Patriarch is just blowing hot air.

What do they teach where you come from?
