Awakening is not an achievement, for all that arises, ceases, as Buddha taught. Thus, awakening cannot be a created or an attained or an achieved thing in itself. It can only be that which you already are. Definitions here are a tricky thing. For Theravadins will exclaim is that the self you're talking about!? Well.. no. The self is a concept, a thought. Just like no-self. They are mere concepts about reality that derive from eachother, thus no being real in themselves. And, in this paradoxical reality, in which "every time you say something is, it isn't", Zen arises. For Zen is a discipline of realizing there was nothing to realize. Of experiencing the obvious (because it's the Truth and not illusory). Now, in such tradition, arises the Zen method. The koans are a means to let the intellectual mind that endlessly needs to cathegorize, explain and describe everything, to get enough of it. That is to say, like letting a child play as much as he wants so that he can finally calm down.
