師問南泉：「如何是道？」泉云：「平常心是。」師云：「還可趣向不？」泉云：「擬即乖。」師云：「不擬，爭知是道？」泉云：「道不屬知、不知。知是妄覺、不知是無記。若真達不疑之道，猶如太虛廓然蕩豁，豈可強是非也。」師於言下頓悟玄旨，心如朗月。
The Master asked Nanquan, “What is the Way?”
Nanquan said “Ordinary Mind is the Way.”
The Master said, “Is it necessary to go towards something?”
Nanquan replied, “If you take measure, then right there it’s lost.”
The Master said “Without measuring, is striving for knowledge the Way?”
Nanquan said, “The Way does not include knowledge or ignorance. Knowledge is delusion, ignorance is forgetfulness. If one has truly arrived at the doubtless Way, then it is like Great Emptiness shaking open into vastness, how could there be the excess of right or wrong?”
Upon hearing these words, the Master had sudden awakening into the mysterious principle, and his mind shone like the moon.
