Doing some research on a few threads and I came across mention of a relatively "newly-discovered" work, the "Zutang Ji" or "A Collection from the Halls of the Patriachs" (More Info).
I haven't started looking into it at all, but I did want to share one excerpt that I found striking, but I don't know which teacher this is attributed to:
Each time a monk came for a visit, the master would seize his neck and say:
"Which demon told you to renounce home?"
"Which demon told you to receive the precepts?"
"Which demon told you to be an itinerant monk?""If you can tell me, I will strangle you to death."
"If you can't tell me, I will also strangle you to death."
"Speak quickly! Speak quickly!"
