Faith in Mind, Third Excerpt

To return to the root is to find the essence,

but to pursue appearance or enlightenment is to miss the Source.

To awaken even for a moment

is to go beyond appearance and emptiness.

Richard B. Clarke

Returning to the root, we get the essence;

Following after appearances, we loose the spirit.

If for only a moment we see within,

We have surpassed the emptiness of things.

R.H. Blyth

Return to the root and you'll grasp the meaning,

but trail after lights and you lose their source.

For the moment shine your own light—

then you can master the Emptiness before you.

Burton Watson

This is way more fun than I thought — there are at least a couple dozen more translations to compare as well.

About this business about "returning to the root" and "shining your own light". . . Who isn't radiantly manifesting this light in natural unencumbered freedom?
