Zen and Mosh Pits

I'd like to address the assembly. To some, this forum may seem like a circus. A boxing match. A dysfunctional family. Or perhaps a circle jerk with a bunch of agreers just agreeing with each other. But it's so much more than appearances.

It reminds me of the punk scene. When I was younger, I'd mosh pits with the big dawgs, stage dive with kings, and sing along with everybody else. There were bloody times and there were great times. To an outsider, it looks like a bunch of kids squabbling with each other over nothing. It looks like they're just fighting each other. But here's where the real beauty comes.

Let an outsider come in and threaten what's going on. The record scratches and everybody turns their head at the threat. Or even supposed threat. Zen is the same way to me. In the way that we instantly unify against an outside threat despite our squabbles and arguments. We all stand together when someone from the outside comes in. Good or bad.

To me, that strange notion of family, sangha, circle of friends, whatever you want to call it, is truly beautiful. We can jump all over each other's domes and tread down each other's throats, but that's for US to do. Not some wayfarer.

Whether you like me or not, whether we agree or not, whether you read this or not, this is beautiful to me. I'll mosh pits with you and sing along with you too.
