Record of Yunmen, Seventh Excerpt

In the hall, Master Yunmen said,

"Tell me, what level of activity is it when the old buddhas do it with the pillars?"

Nobody answered, so The Master said, "Ask me, I'll tell you!"

A monk asked, and the Master answered, "One silk sash: thirty in cash."

In place of the first words, the Master said, "When clouds gather on South Mountain, rain falls on North Mountain."

The monk went on inquiring, "How about 'one silk sash: thirty in cash'?"

The Master replied, "It's a deal!"

A monk asked, "What is that which goes beyond the Dharma body?"

Master Yunmen replied, "It's all very well for you to talk about 'beyond.' But what do you mean by 'Dharma body'?"

Monk said, "Please, Master consider [what I asked]!"

Yunmen said, "Well, let's leave considerations aside for now. How does the Dharma body speak?"

Yunmen remarked, "That's something you could cook up on the long bench. Let me ask you: Can the Dharma body eat rice?"

The monk was speechless.

Yunmen ends this series with a veritable cliff-hanger. Who will jump off. . .

As for this beyond the Dharma body business, be careful! Don't go saying Yunmen evaded but how else can it be brought it up?
