Birth and Death

I used to be so afraid of dying. We don’t have any clue how we got here, no one remembers a choice being made, a decision to be born.

Even though we are dying from the moment we are born, as children the idea doesn’t touch most of us. We feel immortal in those years.

It is usually when we experience death or loss that the concepts form around death. Exceptions exist, but watching the ones we love fall apart is a terrifying experience.

But what is it about death that makes us so afraid? Is it that our bodies will be food for the worms? Is it the idea that we don’t know, the unknown, that makes your hair stand on end?

All of these are just ideas, concepts. We form them around things like birth and death, love and loss. In other words, we have never actually experienced death, so anything we think about it is just an idea.

Ideas and concepts give rise to feelings, just as feelings give rise to ideas and concepts. It is just attachment that gives these ideas power to influence us. When we don’t hold the idea of death in our mind, what is there to be afraid of?

Attachment to anything leads to suffering, our nature is outside of limitations.
