Zen has its roots in Buddhism and this cannot be denied.
The three major schools of Zen in Japan (Soto, Rinzai, and Obaku) are all Buddhist schools. The oldest, Rinzai, was established some time in the 12th Century, followed by Soto in the 13th Century, and Obaku in the 17th Century.
Since its introduction into Japan, the different sects of Zen have all been Buddhist. They study and chant Buddhist texts, they attribute their origins to the Buddha through Bodhidharma, they have Buddhist iconography in their temples, and they use Buddhist terms such as Buddha-nature, Sangha, Dharma, etc.
Zen has always been a tradition within Buddhism.
