Not Zen? (Repeat Question 1) Suppose a person denotes your lineage and your teacher as Buddhism unrelated to Zen, because there are several quotations from Zen patriarchs denouncing seated meditation. Would you be fine saying that your lineage has moved away from Zen and if not, how would you respond to being challenged concerning it?
I haven't yet seen a quotation or an explanation of one that undeniably and wholly denounces meditation.
I don't care about lineages and names. Difficult to say if you are even studying/practicing Zen when you don't know what it is. I am extremely curious about the texts I've read so far though. There is a special flavour to them.
In any case, feel free to point out how my understanding of the topic is not relevant to Zen. It could start an interesting discussion
What's your text? (Repeat Question 2) What text, personal experience, quote from a master, or story from zen lore best reflects your understanding of the essence of zen?
Someone asked, "During each hour of the day, for twenty-four hours, how should I apply my mind?" Joshu said, "You are used by the hours. I use them. What is this "time" you are asking about?"
Plenty of others that walk you in circles but leave you somehow different than you were when you started, and some that seem to give a glimpse of insight like this one.
Dharma low tides? (Repeat Question 3) What do you suggest as a course of action for a student wading through a "dharma low-tide"? What do you do when it's like pulling teeth to read, bow, chant, sit, or post on r/zen?
Why would you go against the grain so strongly? If you don't feel like chanting, don't do it. Or do it anyway, just not half-assedly.
