Anyone who would be a guide to the source first distinguishes the false from the true.(1) Once the false and the true have been distinguished, it is also essential that the time and situation be understood.(2) It is, furthermore, necessary to speak with the eye of the source, able to make a point and to respond without inconsistency.(3)
_
Thus, although there is nothing personal in a statement, we still make provisional use of discernment of the aim within words.(4) The Ts’ao-Tung has “knocking and calling out” for its function, the Lin-chi has “interchange” for its working; Yunmen “contains, covers, and cuts off the flows”; while the Kuei-Yang silently matches square and round. (5) Like a valley echoing melodies, like matching talismans at a pass, although they are different in their manners, that does not inhibit their fluid integration.(6)
_
In recent generations, Zen teachers have lost the basis; students have no guidance. They match wits egotistically and take what is ephemeral for an attainment.(7) Where is the heart to guide others? No longer do we hear of knowledge to destroy falsehood.(8) Caning and shouting at random, they say they have studied Te-shan and Lin-chi; presenting circular symbols to each other, they claim they have deeply understood Kuei-shan and Yang-shan.(9)
_
Since they do not handle the all-embracing source in their answers, how can they know the essential eye in their actions?(10) They fool the young and deceive the sagacious. (11) Truly they bring on the laughter of objective observers and call calamity upon their present state.(12) This is why the Overnight Illuminate said, “If you do not want to incur hellish karma, do not slander the Buddha’s true teaching.”(13)
_
People like this cannot be all told of. They just leave their teachers’ heritage without any insight of their own. (14) Having no basis upon which to rely, their restless consciousness is unclear.(15) They are only to be pitied, but it is hard to inform them of this. (16)

(1.) Those who have no interest in decerning the 'false' from the 'true' are called relativists. They believe 'true' and 'false' are artificial constructs and have nothing to do with reality, that is why they lie and don't examine closely. After all, why bother looking to see when it doesn't matter either way?
These are the people who can't tell black from white, who can't name the finger, who find freedom is closing their eyes and dreaming up fantasies they can control and paint over what is in front of them. They have no interest in opening their eyes to look.
That is their way....but see here that Fayan does not practice or follow that way. He deserns true from false.
_
(2.) Now we are getting into context. This is not about finding some "absolutele' truth, true in a changless sense, but truth in the living reality.
If you are reading this on a computer right now, the statement "I am reading Pikkko's words on my computer screen." is the undeniable truth. When you go off and do something else, say eat your dinner with your friend or spouse, the statement "I am reading Pikkko's words on my computer screen" is undeniably false. Understand?
_
(3.) In the moment, what is the heart of the matter? How am I choosing my words right now? I am making a point, in context with the above text, am I not? I am addressing what I see to be the source in a consistent argument. Can you see that?
_
(4.)In order to use language we have to apply and add our unique discernment. My argument and interpretation of Fayan here, however direct, has and will always have the bias of my perspective and chosen articulation. If you critically wanted to explain or comment on this writing of a Fayan, you indoubtedly woild have done it differently than how I currently am.
_
(5.) All different styles of addressing the matter at hand.
_
(6.) Can you see their commonality? The more you read the various Zen Masters the more you will notice how differently they talk about the same stuff.
_
(7.) They believe trickery and one upmanship in discussion is a sign of the Zen Master. They believe they have eaten the candy within the closed fist of Zen.
There isn't any candy there, so what they ate and now prize is simply a product of their own imagination and illusions of grandier. They confuse their preferences for particular states with Zen itself.
_
(8.) What can it mean to destroy falsehood?
Whether or not you agree with me and my perspective, I strive to not confuse you but to offer you a coherent idea or argument from what I see. My interest is not for you to accept it as either but for it to be understood enough for to to decide what you wish to do with it.
Be wary of those who aren't interested in speaking coherently or willing to describe their ideas when faced with an earnest inquiry. Anyone who seems to genuinely desire to understand me I will make the effort to explain myself.
_
(9.) Is this not what we see most on /r/Zen do?
_
(10.) If they do not acknowledge even context how can even be said that they know themselevs?
_
(11.) Most of us go through it when we come here...hating old man Ewk for his seemingly grumpy scholarship, enjoying the banter and dance of the shadowy trickster and their creative ploys to keep themselves the center of attention...it is a process for most.
_
(12.) Such characters who only take delight in fooling and decieving in their roleplay...where will they be in 10-20 years, I wonder?
_
(13.) The more easily you lie, the more easily you will lie to yourself, deeper and deeper.
Beware.
_
(14.) They have to follow their own way, as they so choose.
_
(15.) If the water before you is indeed murky and clouded, such as it is. But for it to be murky and cloudy where you say you can see right through in Crystal clairty? What can one do with such inner deception?
They will follow the inner deception until it burns they so badly that they seek a different way. That is their fate on mass.
_
16.
Take care, all of you.
