Master Yangshan. like most teachers, also taught laypeople. The officer Lu, who had visited Master Guishan, came to Yangshan after having some insight on reading a scripture.
Master Yangshan asked officer Lu, “I hear that you’ve achieved awakening by reading a scripture. Is this true?”
Lu said, “Yes, master. When reading the Nirvana Sutra, it was the line, ‘Without cutting off desire, enter nirvana.’”
The master held up his whisk and said, “How can this enter nirvana?”
Lu said, “There is no need for even the word ‘enter’”
The master said, “‘Entering’ is not for you.”
Lu stood up and left.
Winddrakes " jeeze scoobey" moment- I do not get this one. I identify as the laymen who is eager to get certified by a master. I have had plenty of mystical moments to the point that I am pretty sure I understand ultimate reality, which is crazy if you think about it, BUT i would love a " you did it son, here is your engraved Buddah fishing knife" but that is not the part that threw me. It was Yangshans " entering is not for you" ... like is yangshan telling the student he cannot do it? Is he telling him it is not the " I " that enters, bottom line is I feel like yangshang is telling ME i am wasting my time, I lack the skill to do this zen stuff which is actually were I am at ( so i projected onto Yangshan... shocking) ok a poem:
Seeing is not it
knowing is not it
One cannot pick and choose
Ok so I did this shit right? Like me? Windrake? Come on guys... where did everyone go? 1000 re-births as a whisk sounds pretty sweet! Whisk life!
