I've heard several anecdotes about zen masters who, when their students became enlightened, they would caution them to "keep it to themselves." This seems to be for several reasons, but the main one being that if you start talking about what is actually true in a false society, you are very likely to get into trouble or even killed (Jesus being crucified, Socrates being poisoned, or Hillaj Mansour being killed are prime examples). Therefore, they told them to be quiet.
Does anyone know where these stories actually are, or what zen texts they come from? Can someone please help me find them? Thank you.
