Manseong was a nun who was a student of Mangong Sunim. The following accounts of her teaching are from Zen Women p.134, edited slightly for readability.
Manseong was known for her simple and direct teaching during formal lectures and work practice. One day a nun asked, "How do I cultivate the way of the Buddha?"
"No cultivation," answered Manseong Sunim curtly.
The nun persevered, "What about obtaining release from the cycle of birth and death?"
"Who chains your birth and death?" Manseong replied.
On another occasion a nun asked, "How long does it take for a sentient being to become a buddha?"
"There is no sentient being and no need to become a buddha," answered Manseong Sunim.
The nun looked puzzled and tried to ask another question when she suddenly heard a thundering shout from Manseong Sunim. The poor nun suffered a shock.
Nevertheless, when she recovered moments later, she glowed with an instant understanding and made a deep bow.
